Psychology is a varied field, though all careers in psychology are primarily concerned with studying how brain function and the environment affect behavior. Psychologists can have duties ranging from research, diagnosing, treating, consulting, teaching, and testing intelligence and personality. Many psychologists work in health care, but there are several other in-demand jobs in psychology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of psychologists is expected to grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020.
Clinical and Counseling Psychology
Careers in clinical and counseling psychology are expected to grow especially fast due to the greater demand for clinical and counseling psychologists in hospitals, mental health centers, and social service agencies. These psychologists address patients' mental health concerns such as depression, stress, PTSD, autism, and addiction. Clinical and counseling psychologists are also needed to address mental health concerns unique to the aging population, such as Alzheimer's.
Health Care Psychology
The demand for health care psychologists is expected to increase as these psychologists collaborate more frequently with doctors, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. While these psychologists primarily focus on mental and behavioral health, they also work together with other health care professionals to establish interdisciplinary wellness programs. Health care psychologists research the different factors contributing to mental illness. Through their research, they hope to aid patients in controlling their own health. In addition to hospitals, these psychologists can be found in outpatient mental health and substance abuse clinics, conducting such research as helping to find alternatives to pain management through biofeedback.
